Coastal Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center revealed that two local individuals would receive complimentary oral surgery to transform their smiles
Santa Maria, CA (January 20, 2016) – Oral and maxillofacial surgeons Anthony Pitrowski, DMD, MD, and Kenneth Goldberg, DMD, launched the Second Chance program offering residents of northern Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo counties a “second chance” to smile. The program produced over 640 local applicants, and received a remarkable amount of supportive response from the community. This morning, the doctors announced that they were unable to choose only one recipient and revealed they had chosen two final recipients of the charitable Second Chance program this year. The first recipient is Celia Reyes, of Lompoc, and the second is Michelle Silveira, of Santa Maria.
Celia’s daughter submitted her application in hopes that her 61-year old mother would get the treatment she needed to alleviate the constant pain she sees her endure from infected, decaying, and broken teeth, and to eliminate the embarrassment she faces on a daily basis. She explained how kind, giving, and selfless her mother is and the dedication she has shown throughout her life to succeed. She continued to share that her mother had struggled with domestic abuse and was forced to start fresh as a single mother of three, one terminally ill with a rare form of bone cancer. However, no matter what hardships Celia has been challenged with in her life, she recognizes that many families face their own battles. As a coping mechanism, Celia finds solace in giving to others while working hard to instill the importance of giving back into her three children. “One year, she decided that she was going to take her Christmas bonus and buy toys for the children in the hospital,” said Crystal, Celia’s daughter. “She said, ‘No one deserves to be in the hospital on Christmas,’ so that was the start of our tradition.” Aside from being a selfless person deserving of this gift, Celia’s daughter desperately wants her mother to have a stronger self-worth and be able to look in the mirror and see how beautiful she is, inside and out, and this program will help her attain that.
As Drs. Pitrowski and Goldberg continued to read through heartfelt stories, they came across another that stood out to them. Michelle is an admirable single mother of three supporting her family as a child nutrition worker at a local school. She explained the constant disappointment and embarrassment of having the inability to smile at the students or set a positive example for her children. “I want to overcome my fear and be able to smile back to all the children I’m around and not have people back up because my breath is unbearable,” said Michelle. Over the years, she has continued to fall victim and suffer from multiple rotting and missing teeth, possibly from a previous encounter with braces that were left on too long. The gift of a new smile will not only boost her confidence, but it will allow her to interact with the students at her school and give her the ability to proudly smile in pictures with her kids.
In addition to restoring oral function, a natural smile, and lifted self-esteem, the Second Chance program aims to improve both recipient’s overall quality of life by addressing other specific needs to each individual patient, such as improving physical fitness, incorporating a nutritionist, and providing personal and career counseling. Community members interested in contributing their services are encouraged to contact Coastal Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center and fill out a donation form by visiting, https://secondchancecoastal.com/donate.php.
The recipients of the Second Chance program will have an entire arch of teeth replaced with a restoration method known as the Full-Arch Replacement. With this, the surgeons are able to place dental implants in the mouth and attach a full set of teeth, typically all in the same day. The Full-Arch Replacement method offers patients a long-term restoration of teeth that look and function similar to natural teeth.
